Sunday 10 a.m. - First 100 visitors (1 per family/group) will receive a very special 30 year old John Wayne 3" Bronze Medallion issue by the United States Mint and designed by F. Gasparro, Dated 1979... This is a beautifully made United States Congressional Medallion issued to commemorate John Wayne after his passing - "The Duke". Solid bronze medallion features a portrait of John Wayne on the front with the inscription "John Wayne - American" Retail Value Approx $35
Authorized by Public Law 95-16, this medal was struck in recognition of John Wayne for his distinguished career as an actor and his service to the Nation. This medal is a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal received by members of John Wayne’s family on his behalf at a ceremony at the United States Capitol building on March 6, 1980.
The obverse of the medal features a head and shoulder portrait of Wayne with the inscription, “JOHN WAYNE – AMERICAN.” Frank Gasparro, Chief Sculptor and Engraver of the United States Mint, executed the likeness from a photograph furnished by the Wayne family. This photograph was Wayne’s favorite portrait of himself, taken during the filming of “The Alamo.”
The reverse depicts John Wayne galloping on horseback in the Monument Valley - the location for many of his pictures and a familiar scene the world over.
